It’s an ongoing debate. Which is better, Facebook or Twitter?
The New York Times has an article comparing the two social media giants to the children’s fable of The Tortoise and the Hare. Facebook represents the hare, quick and cunning. While Twitter is like the tortoise, slow and steady.
Facebook took off while gathering enormous amounts of data about it’s users. Privacy was questioned as Facebook made things public that had previously been set to private. Facebook users need to be on their toes in order to keep up with the ever-changing privacy settings.
Twitter, on the other hand, has gained more trust. What is private, seems to stay private. Twitter seems to be more open about collecting user’s data and giving them the ability to opt out of certain data gathering features.
So where are the readers or your target audience? That’s a good question. It depends on the business.
According to Pew Internet’s Research on Social Media Demographics, as of August 2012, 66% of online adults use Facebook, but only 16% use Twitter. Facebook users are more trusting of others, have more close relationships, and are more politically engaged than users of other social media sites. The average age of Facebook users is 38, while Twitter is at 33. But, here’s what’s interesting, 30% of internet users between the ages of 18 and 24 are on Twitter.

So, which one should you choose? Twitter or Facebook?
Yes, each has benefits and disadvantages, but overall, you can (and probably should) use both to connect with your readers or target audience. But, if you don’t have time to do both, choose the one you like best. You’ll be more likely to post and interact if you are comfortable with the user interface.
